BUILDING A MOVEMENT!

February 7, 2012
On behalf of the membership of the Youth Justice Coalition, we are honored to invite you to attend ¡§The Possibility of One Percent: Building Youth Development in LA¡¨ on Wednesday, February 22 and Thursday, February 23, 2012.
The Youth Justice Coalition is bringing together the Los Angeles Mayor¡¦s Office, National Juvenile Justice Network and leaders in LA¡¦s youth prevention and intervention communities to strategize on how we can direct $100 million towards jobs, youth centers and community intervention workers for Los Angeles.
History:
The Youth Justice Coalition has called for a ¡§dollar for dollar¡¨ investment – for every dollar that Los Angeles spends to lock a young person up, we should spend an equal or greater amount on community and youth investments. A redirection of just 1% of funds going to law enforcement (LAPD, Sheriffs, courts, County Probation, District Attorney and City Attorney) would provide enough funding for 50 comprehensive youth centers (each with a $500,000 a year budget), 500 full-time community intervention/peace workers in schools and neighborhoods, and 25,000 youth jobs (total of $100 Million)!
Request:
As a respected leader, we would greatly appreciate your participation in this historic strategy session. (A list of invited participants is included below.) The campaign development meeting will be held at the California Endowment, 2/22 and 2/23 from 9am ¡V 4pm. The Endowment is located just north of Union Station and across the street from Placita Olvera and Chinatown at 1000 North Alameda Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Please let us know if you (or someone else who can move projects within your office/organization) can attend to build a campaign plan and hopefully help lead the campaign toward victory . RSVP to Kruti Parekh at 323-490-0601 or kruti222@yahoo.com by Wednesday, February 15, 2012.
Thank you for your attention. We look forward to working with you to build youth justice, respect and opportunity for LA¡¦s youth.

Notes from January 20th Meeting: The Youth Justice Coalition
County Wide Meeting
Meeting: 2PM – 4PM
Agenda:
1. Introductions
2. 1% Campaign Update
3. No New Jails Action
4. Art Contest for FREE LA Students, guests are judges
1% Update: In December, the Youth Justice Coalition and allies led an action to transform an abandoned library (since 2004) and create a community center for 4 days. The police intervened immediately and the action led to several meetings with city leaders. In the meeting with the Mayor’s Office and in presenting the 1% Campaign we described that we need to build a youth development infrastructure in Los Angeles. When we talked about the preservation of GRYD, the Mayor’s Office was attentive; they really want to protect GRYD. The Mayor’s Office said they can find $40 Million to go towards LA City’s share of the County’s $100 Million. We will be having a 2 day strategy session to bring together budget experts, the National Juvenile Justice Network, Mayor’s Office, city and county leaders, youth and community leaders and community organizers. We will be using the countywide meetings to include as many youth and community members’ ideas, guidance and experience into the building and development of the Youth Development infrastructure.
No New Jails Action: The sheriffs are proposing an increase in 2.6 (1.4 Billion to build, 1.2 in interest to bankers). There is an action that we are having at the Board of Supervisors (BOS) on January 24, 2012. We are creating masks to show “We are Not Animals” – there were masks being created during the meeting as well as masks that had been made already in the room. People were invited to be speakers during the Public Comment on this issue and all were invited to come to the Speak Out during the Media Conference. Media Conference begins at 10 AM, Public Comment will begin when the BOS gets to the agenda item. There will be a script of talking points in case people need assistance speaking on the issue.
Art Contest: While the meeting was going on, students were in their art classes preparing masks, rhymes/chants and a theater piece for the board of supervisors action. As the last 30 minutes of the meeting, students presented their work and guests became judges for the winners. Thank you to our contestants and judges!
Special Thanks to SoCal Library who brought us posters of “Library: ‘We must: little by little, set up simple libraries in the liberated areas, lend others the books we possess, help others learn to read a book, the newspaper, and to understand what is read. Hold sessions for collective reading and lead those who are reading into discussion and into expressing views on what they have read.’ – Amilcar Cabral”
