There has been a dramatic increase in the use of gang injunctions in Orange County. Recently, 2 additional “injunction zones” were created targetting three neighborhoods in the city of Placentia – La Jolla and Placentia. Atwood is also seeing incresaed police sippression and residents fear that an injunction might be planned for that neighborhood as well.
At last Thursday’s community meeting, over 60 people came out – including over 50 LIFE-LONG COMMUNITY RESIDENTS OF THE COMMUNITIES OF PLACENTIA AND LA JOLLA, ALONG WITH MEMBERS OF CALIFORNIA FAMILIES TO ABOLISH SOLITARY CONFINEMENT, CHICANOS UNIDOS, ORANGE COUNTY ACLU, UC IRVINE LAW SCHOOL AND THE YOUTH JUSTICE COALITION – to discuss the injuctions and what they mean for both the people served, their families, and the larger community.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD – 7PM PLACENTIA CITY COUNCIL MEETING
Come out and share the impact of injunctions on trapping people in the system; promoting gentrification; and displacing families from communities they have lived in for generations.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH – PACK THE COURT TO CHALLENGE THE INJUNCTIONS
ORANGE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT IN SANTA ANA
There is a motion going in to the court tomorrow to request that the hearing be postponed. Please hold this date and stay in touch with us to see if a new court date is set.
In communities throughout the state, gang injunctions have increased the use of agressive policing impacting the entire community, including increased stops and frisks of youth/young adults on the street, increased searches in schools, raids of people’s homes, Probation, Parole and ICE checks, and the increased use of militarization including helicopters above the community.
