Amid a global movement for Black lives, California’s legislative leaders are conceding to the police lobby and playing political games with SB 731: The Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act of 2020. If passed, SB 731 will revoke the badges of police officers who are fired for excessive force, sexual misconduct, or dishonesty and allow for independent investigations into misconduct.
In the last five days, we have built incredible momentum. Organizers and advocates successfully propelled SB 731 forwardand have secured the first public hearing this week. This is our final week to pass SB 731, as all bills must advance by August 31! Our biggest hurdle will be the Assembly Floor vote happening TODAY.
Take action today to advance SB 731: The Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act!
***Call your Assemblymembers all day, as the bill must be voted on by Monday, August 31st and 11:59PM!! ***
Sample Call/Voicemail Script:
“Hello, my name is (NAME) and I live in (CITY) with (organization). I urge you to support SB 731! SB 731 will create a process to remove abusive police from the streets and protect Black people and people of color who are targeted by police violence every day. California is currently 1 of only 5 states without a police decertification process. Finally, the bill would reduce barriers to seeking civil liability against police officers that violate a person’s civil rights. (Share any of your personal experiences with police abuse or your thoughts at the end.) Thank you for your time!”
