A youth-led, liberation-focused school building organizers, not just graduates
We educate, liberate, and organize youth to transform systems that harm us.
F.R.E.E. LA High School is a 2-year accredited high school diploma program in partnership with Youthbuild Charter School of California. Created to empower youth impacted by probation, incarceration, and school pushout. Enrollment is open for all LA County residents (age 16-24).
Our classrooms go beyond textbooks and standardized tests. Young people study community history, abolitionist movements, and the legacies of resistance that shape our lives today. Political education is core—not an add-on—because we believe students deserve to know the truth about systems of harm and the power of collective struggle.
F.R.E.E. LA is a place where students become decision-makers and leaders while learning core subjects. They organize and lead campaigns on issues that matter to them, plan collective actions that bring their visions to life, and directly shape the policies and practices of their schools.
Wellness is at the heart of how we learn, organize, and grow together. We practice transformative justice by addressing harm in ways that heal rather than punish, creating space for accountability built on love. Mental health care is treated as a collective right, not a privilege, with resources and support woven into daily life.
In partnership with YouthBuild Charter School and LA Trade Tech, students receive hands-on construction training Monday through Friday. Youth earn training stipends while building real-world skills, along with industry-recognized credentials and stackable CPR and First Aid certificates. The program strengthens literacy, numeracy, and prepares students for union and career pathways in the trades.
Our in-house Culinary Arts pathway provides daily training in food safety, preparation, and cooking techniques. In partnership with YouthBuild Charter School, students build foundational kitchen skills while learning industry standards. Participants can also access paid, on-the-job training opportunities on weekends to deepen their experience.
Through our partnership with 4 Learning, students receive certification training in music technology, production, engineering, and songwriting. Youth work daily in hands-on stations, learning the tools and techniques needed to create and produce music. Successful participants earn certificates validating their creative and technical skills.
Our emerging Manufacturing pathway introduces students to safety, mechanics, and hands-on technical skills in partnership with the Hurt/Help Group. Youth will learn automotive repair and welding through in-house Friday trainings. This track expands our career pathways to include skilled trades that open doors to sustainable employment.
Young people interested in organizing begin as paid LOBOS (Leading Our Beloveds Out the System) fellows, building power through 10-month after-school and summer programming. Fellows practice peacebuilding, community-building, policy strategy, and advocacy alongside experienced youth and adult organizers. Many have gone on to full-time roles at YJC and respected organizations across LA County, turning organizing into sustainable careers.
F.R.E.E. LA graduates can become youth health promoters after completing substance use prevention and intervention workshops. In these paid part-time roles, they lead community health education, distribute Narcan kits and resources weekly, and mentor current students. They join a growing legacy of youth and adult health promoters committed to protecting and nourishing our communities.
F.R.E.E. LA High School is open to youth ages 16-24 who have been pushed out of school, are formerly incarcerated or on probation, are young parents, or just need a high school diploma. Applications are open year-round. Come visit our school!
